Essential V: Healthcare Policy for Advocacy in Health Care

Description:

Essential V describes the importance of nurses’ involvement in healthcare policy and advocacy. As leaders in the practice setting, it is imperative that DNP graduates have the capacity to proactively engage in the development of health policy at all levels. As part of professional practice, they may be called on to analyze health policies and proposals and provide the critical interface between practice, research and policy. With this critical knowledge, they are prepared to participate on committees, boards, or task forces; and act as advocates for the nursing profession through organizational leadership.

DNP V Essentials achievement:

During the course of the DNP program and QIP, it was essential to apply understanding of current health policies surrounding my population of interest. This included application at the organization, regional and national level. On a national level, the current policies create barriers to universal access for all. On the local level, efforts are in place to assess and screen social determinants of heath (SDOH) as a means to reduce these same barriers. At the organization level, the balance between cost for providing universal services and addressing these SDOH is at play. My role to support policy efforts moved across all three continuums.

At the organization level, I presented data and information that illuminated key stakeholders to the impact on the current divide. This enlisted the right group of team members to provide adequate council for policy review. At the regional level, I sit on the Leadership Committee for the Washington Nursing Action Coalition. WNAC’s primary focus this year includes policy reform related to SDOH.

At the national level, opportunity for DNP/PhD collaborations are essential to improve the science. The success of the DNP/PhD Intensives set the foundation for developing this collaborative work in the future. In November, 2020, the collaborative learning will be presented at a podium presentation at the Association for Leadership Science in Nursing annual conference. This sets the stage for expanding collaborative relationships that will encourage further science to aid policy development at the national level.
