Essential II describes nursing leader development. The DNP prepared leader cultivates expertise in organizational and system leadership to affect the healthcare delivery system and improve patient outcomes. Successful development of this Essential includes expertise in assessment and identification of systems issues, and the facilitation of changes in practice delivery. System issues encompass organizational, political, cultural and economic perspectives. Through this Essential, the DNP prepared nurse is equipped to assume roles in leadership across the professional continuum and practice settings.
DNP II Essentials achievement:

At contemplation of my DNP project, effective and thorough assessment of the organization undertaking the QIP set the stage for successful change. To accomplish this, a root cause analysis using Ishikawa’s Fishbone Diagram and a Driver Diagram was completed as per resources provided by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). During the course of the project, Kotter’s 8-step change model complimented the primary framework, Improving Chronic Illness Care. The Plan-Do-Study-Act framework was used to address improvement opportunities related to patient safety and process measure implementation throughout the DNP project. Financial modeling was undertaken in early curriculum and applied throughout the DNP project to address economic concerns and risks for sustainability. Ethics committee review and approval was obtained through University of Colorado and the organization.
